JC Penney has announced the closure of 154 stores across the United States.

The closures were announced Thursday after a review of the company's retail footprint. They filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year, and said stores would close in several phases.

Among those being closed include stores in Hopkinsville, Owensboro, Carbondale, Mt. Vernon, and Dyersburg.

This means that for now, stores in Paducah, Murray, Cape Girardeau, Clarksville and Jackson will remain open. Multiple media reports say another phase of closures is likely before the end of 2020.

On their company blog, JC Penney said, "We will continue to operate the majority of our stores and our flagship store, jcp.com, to ensure our valued customers continue to have access to the products and brands they need and want."

As of Friday, nearly 500 of over 800 JC Penney Stores have reopened after government officials eased COVID-19 restrictions. Store closing sales should begin at these 154 locations around June 12, and should take 10-16 weeks.

CEO Jill Soltau said in a May 15 press release that their plan for renewal strategy was beginning to pay off earlier in the year, prior to the pandemic, but, "the closure of our stores due to the pandemic necessitated a more fulsome review to include the elimination of outstanding debt."
