Carlisle County Circuit Court Clerk Kevin Hoskins told West Kentucky Star that 69-year-old Martha Ligon pleaded guilty but mentally ill. The guilty plea is for manslaughter instead of murder. She appeared before Circuit Judge Tim Langford.
Hoskins said Ligon pleaded guilty to lesser charges on two of four additional counts of attempted murder. One charge was reduced to assault 2nd degree, and another was reduced to wanton endangerment 2nd degree. The other two charges will be dismissed at her sentencing, which is scheduled for July 6.
After a mental health evaluation, on May 4, Ligon was ruled competent to stand trial.
Ligon is accused of shooting her husband, 83-year-old Ray Ligon, in the chest on July 1 in the Milburn community. He died from his wounds at an Evansville hospital.
