The National Weather Service was braced for the possibility of heavy rains and even tornadoes Wednesday night, but the overwhelming reports from spotters were about lots of large hail.

The largest hailstone spotted Wednesday occurred just before 7pm in southeast Missouri near Sikeston, measuring 2 1/4 inches.

A few minutes later, 1 1/4-inch hail was reported in Bardwell. By 8pm, 1 1/2-inch hail occurred southwest of Murray.

Plenty of 1-inch hail was seen in dozens of locations from Cape Girardeau to Cadiz, and from Herrin to Cairo in southern Illinois.

In Mt. Carmel, IL, 71-mph winds were recorded as well as gusts over 60 mph in Perry County, MO and Jackson County, IL.
