Murray State University Chief of Police Jamie Herring has been selected as a 2018 Director of the Year finalist by Campus Safety Magazine.

Herring began at Murray State in 2016 after serving for more than 30 years in numerous roles at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

The Director of the Year winners and runners up will be announced at Campus Safety Conference West, to be held in Las Vegas June 17-19.

Since beginning at Murray State, Herring has led the University's Police Department through numerous changes and continued innovations in equipment, resources, and programs to best assist the department and its relationship with the campus and greater community while fulfilling the following departmental vision statement: "To be the best university police agency of our size in the nation by building trust, creating partnerships, and providing effective, caring, and courteous service."

Programs developed under Herring's leadership have included a police/community fun day, the DoNut Worry exam day event, a student police advisory board and 'Carols with Cops' event held prior to the winter holiday.

Last year, the Police Department and Center for Adult and Regional Education were named first in the nation for campus safety initiatives with both University units receiving the 2018 Department of the Year award from Safe Campus.

"Everything I've achieved since I arrived at Murray State has been the result of a team effort," said Herring. "The members of the Murray State Police Department and many others at the University deserve much of the credit for what has been accomplished over the past two-and-a-half years. I'm happy I have been able to do my part, and I'm proud to be a Racer."
