'Marketplace 29 A.D.' in Murray This Week
By WestKyStar Staff
MURRAY, KY - The alley just south of Maple Street in Murray is closed this week, transformed into a first-century marketplace. With trade shops, a stage, storytellers, Synagogue school and tents for the tribes, school-aged kids have a chance to learn about Jesus and his culture.

This is the second year for Marketplace 29 A.D. The event is for community children ages 5 to 12 to experience during Fall Break. It's from 9 am to noon, October 8-11 and ends with family participation the evening of October 12.

Last year about 20 churches were involved by sending volunteers and participants as well as donating support and supplies.

Children will be divided into multi-age groups and given a tribal name after one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Children and adults will be dressed in simple costumes. As part of a tribal family, they’ll learn about daily Jewish observances and family life while going to different areas that introduce them to cultural components, including dances, games and drama.

The sights, sounds and smells will transform the alley between Fourth and Fifth streets into a marketplace setting similar to what Jesus would have experienced. The location just off Maple Street connects three local churches – Murray Family Church, First Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church.

“I am excited that Marketplace is happening again this year because more people will have the opportunity to experience this awesome blessing,” Seargent said. “Last year, all who participated, including children, adults and visitors, were overwhelmed by the sense of community and the love of God's people.”

Seargent said imagining the first-century experience in the alley is what inspired her to follow God’s leading to initially organize the event.

Last year there were lots of people wanting to walk through and see the Marketplace, so tours were set up, starting at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall at the east end of the alley. Organizers are planning to do that again this year.
