The Mayfield-Graves County Needline and Food Pantry will receive more than $11,000 in proceeds from the ninth annual community yard and bake sale held Saturday in the Humphries Tobacco Warehouse. The total came from the huge sale coordinated and supported by numerous churches, businesses, organizations and individuals.

Every dollar raised will go to the Needline and Food Pantry that provide emergency utility assistance and food for local needy residents. The faith-based non-profit organization assists about 350 local families per month, according to Director Jackie Herndon. In addition to the donated food, the Food Pantry spends about $3,000 per month purchasing food to help families, Herndon said.

Herndon and Event Chairman Tommy Powell expressed thanks to all those who donated goods and cash, helped with the sales and all the shoppers who came out to buy the merchandise. Leftovers from the sale are donated to the JU Kevil Center and other local charities.

“I think it was the largest quantity of donations we have ever received for this sale and we were blessed with the outpouring from the community,” Powell said. “A lot of people put in some long hours and back breaking work to make this sale a success. For all these people and the Lord providing the results, we are very thankful.”

Churches sponsoring the event this year were First Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church’s Women’s Mission, First Church of the Nazarene and Calvary United Methodist Church.
