An investigation is underway after a shooting in Mayfield Thursday.

According to the Mayfield Police Department, officers responded just before 1 pm to a call of shots fired on South 12th Street. Upon arrival, officers cleared the area, but no one was found in possession of a gun.

Officers found several .40 caliber spent shell casings on the southwest side of the Dunbar Park parking lot. Officers also found several 9mm spent shell casings on the northeast side of the parking lot. Two live rounds and some discarded clothing were also found, and collected as evidence.

Officers canvassed the area and conducted interviews. Witnesses told police that two black men had opened fire on a group of people on the southwest side of the park. The two men, reportedly wearing black and white sweatshirts, were seen fleeing the area in a green van.

Police say one of the shots fired flattened the tire on a man's parked car. Another bullet shattered the back glass of another man's vehicle. A third bullet broke a glass window at the Garden Apartments and lodged in the home's sheet rock. And a fourth bullet damaged a front screen door at the apartment and lodged in the front security door.

More than four hours later, police say they received word that a man was being treated for a gunshot wound to his lower leg at Jackson Purchase Medical Center. Officers interviewed the gunshot victim. He told police he didn't know who shot him, but he saw a green van fleeing the scene.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Mayfield Police Department (270) 247-1621, or Crime Stoppers at (270) 443-8355 or (270)-443-TELL.
