According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake occurred about 8 miles south of Wickliffe along the Mississippi River. It was considered very shallow in depth at just over 1.8 miles.
The tremor was the largest felt in western Kentucky so far in 2017, and the largest since a 3.5 magnitude tremor occurred last May along the Ohio River north of La Center.
The area is included in the northern portion of the New Madrid seismic zone.
