When the thermometer at Barkley Field hit 97 degrees yesterday, it set not one but three records.

It was not only the hottest temperature ever in Paducah for September 16, but it was the hottest day of the entire year. Further, it was the latest date ever that the hottest day of the year was recorded.

Usually the hottest temperatures of the year occur in July or August. But eleven times since 1938, the year's high temperature in Paducah has happened in September.

The previous record for the latest day was September 13. On that day in 2008 the temperature reached 96 degrees, and tied the high for that year.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Paducah in September is 104 degrees, happening in 1939.

The latest date the temperature ever reached 100 degrees in Paducah was September 15, at 102 degrees, also in 1939.

The normal high temperature for mid-September in Paducah is 82 degrees.

Temperatures through Thursday are expected in the lower 90s, but triple-digit heat indices are still a possibility.
