Murray city leaders have drafted a new smoking ordinance that would place additional restrictions on where residents are allowed to light up in town.

Murray Mayor Jack Rose said a working ordinance has been drafted that will be sent to City Council members for review on Thursday.

Murray has already implemented a smoking ban on all city-owned properties, and Murray State University has also banned smoking on campus.  Although he didn't get into specifics of the proposed ordinance, Rose said its purpose is to "fill the gap" that exists between areas that already have bans in place, and those that still allow smoking.

"As I'm sure you know, the university has a smoking ban in place, and we have already banned smoking on all city-owned properties. The proposed ordinance would bring the remainder of the city in line with what we already have." Rose said.

A first reading of the ordinance is set to take place at the next City Council meeting on May 24. We are working to obtain a copy of the draft.
