Assault charges against a Murray man have been upgraded to murder.

Commonwealth Attorney Mark Blankenship says 35-year-old Christopher Smith is now charged with 1st degree murder for his alleged role in the death of 39-year-old Rhonda Runyon of Murray. His bond has also been increased from $500,000 to $1 million.

Calloway County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Smith Thursday evening at a home in the Kirksey area after he reportedly told them he and Runyon had been in an altercation. Runyon had to be airlifted from the scene due to the severity of her injuries, and later died at a Nashville, TN hospital.

Smith's preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 7 in front of District Judge Randall Hutchins.
