Two area universities have been ranked among the region's best values for higher education.

In Washington Monthly's 2016 College Rankings, Murray State University came in 24th and the University of Tennessee at Martin is 17th on the "Best Bang for the Buck" list.

The methodology for the “Best Bang for the Buck” rankings included specific measures such as loan repayment rank, graduation rate, net price of attendance, percentage of first-generation students and percent of Pell Grant students.

Perhaps the heaviest factor in this ranking is the social mobility of enrolled students. Universities that make it a priority to help first-generation and lower or moderate-income students reach graduation and enter the workforce score well in these rankings.

Thirty-seven percent of UT Martin’s spring 2016 graduating class were first-generation college graduates, and 44 percent qualified for federal PELL grants.

Earlier this summer, Murray State University received accolades as one of “America’s Top Colleges” by Forbes along with being named as a “2016 Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
