Federal investigators have determined what caused an airplane crash in Lyon County almost two years ago that killed four people. According to a report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board Thursday, the Piper PA-34 plane ran out of fuel.

Forty-eight-year-old Marty Gutzler, 46-year-old Kimberly Gutzler, their daughter, 9-year-old Piper Gutzler, and her cousin, 14-year-old Sierra Wilder, died in the crash. All four were from Nashville, IL. The family had been vacationing in Florida and was on their way back to Illinois, when the plane went down near Kuttawa on Jan. 2, 2015.

Marty and Kimberly Gutzler's other daughter, seven-year-old Sailor Gutzler, survived the crash. The girl freed herself from the wreckage and went for help.

Bleeding and dressed in a short-sleeved shirt, she walked three-quarters of a mile in near-freezing temperatures through thick briar patches and woods and waded through a creek before reaching the nearest house.
