The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has installed an Intersection Conflict Warning System at the KY 93, KY 293 and KY 1055 intersection about 3 miles south of Eddyville in Lyon County. The system is intended to reduce the number of injury crashes at the intersection just west of the Interstate 24 Exit 45 Eddyville-Princeton Interchange.

While the crash rate for the intersection is about average for intersections of similar configuration and traffic count, KYTC District 1 Traffic Engineer Tom Hines said the injury rate has consistently remained higher than the average.

"In spite of our use of counter-measures that have worked well at other intersections, this location has continued to have issues," Hines said. "This warning system is an appropriate 'next step' in our efforts to drive down the injury rate here."

The system was developed after extensive traffic studies at the intersection.  Approximately 4,200 vehicles travel through the rural intersection in an average day.  During the 3-year period from April, 2012 to April, 2015 there were 11 total crashes at the site.  They were all "angle collisions" with 7 of those resulting in injuries and one including a fatality.

The warning system operates similar to the traffic loops used for sensing vehicles to activate traffic signals. Similar systems have been used in mountainous areas where sight-distance issues block the view of approaching traffic from motorists on side roads.
