The national 24-hour event celebrates the importance of volunteers, including ham radio operators, who provide weather observations to the National Weather Service, especially when normal communication methods are inoperable during extreme weather or earthquakes. A recent example occurred during the massive Ohio Valley ice storm, when most cell phone service went down in our area.
Ham radio operators will participate by making radio contact with NWS offices nationwide and posting weather descriptions.
The Paducah office will be broadcasting on the 20- and 40-meter HF bands, and on a 2-meter repeater via Echolink, in cooperation with the Paducah Amateur Radio Association.
For the special event, a call sign of W4P has been assigned to the Paducah station.
A list of operating procedures are available at the NWS Paducah website, and updates will also be posted on their Facebook and Twitter feeds, all linked below.
