One man is hospitalized and two men are in jail after a stabbing in Mayfield Sunday. Mayfield Police said the stabbing happened at approximately 8:40 Sunday morning at the Garden Apartments, 606 Oak Cove.

When officers arrived they learned that 27-year-old Derek Shaffer had been stabbed multiple times in the torso. Officers quickly learned that two brothers, 35-year-old Derek Cummings and 44-year-old BeMosely Cummings, were responsible for the stabbing.

Officers went to the Cummings’ apartment, detained the two men, and located the knife used in the stabbing. Police said Derek Cummings had attempted to hide the knife behind the apartment building in a wooded area by a water drain. Officers also located blood-stained clothes and wash cloths.

The investigation revealed that BeMosely Cummings and Shaffer had gotten into a physical altercation. Cummings then went downstairs to his apartment to get his brother.

The Cummings then went upstairs where they met Shaffer outside on the balcony. Another physical altercation ensued resulting in Shaffer being stabbed multiple times.

Both BeMosely Cummings and Shaffer were transported to Jackson Purchase Medical Center. Cummings was treated and released. Shaffer was air-lifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

The Cummings were both charged with first-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence. They were lodged in the Graves County Detention Center.
