Mayfield Police say 20-year-old David Emmanual Kayse, of Mayfield, is charged with reckless homicide in the death of his eight-month-old step-son. The infant was found dead at a home in the Garden Apartments on July 15.
Mayfield Police Chief Nathan Kent says his department's investigation, in cooperation with the Graves County Coroner’s Office, State Medical Examiners’ Office, and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, led detectives to arrest Kayse on Monday.
According to a police report, Kayce admitted to covering the head of the baby with a comforter and tucking the blanket under and around the baby. Kayce allegedly confessed to police that he was exhausted and irritated and just wanted the baby to go to sleep so he could sleep.
An autopsy was performed on the infant at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Madisonville on July 16. According to Kent, the Medical Examiner’s preliminary diagnosis listed “no evidence of trauma” but the manner of death was still undetermined at that time, pending the results of toxicology and histology.
Kayse was lodged in the Graves County Jail. Kent said the investigation is ongoing.
