Two people had to be rescued Monday night on the Tennessee River after a towboat sank near Calvert City.

Marshall County Emergency Management says a crew on another towboat saw the men in the water around 9:15 p.m. and picked them up. Several agencies, fire and EMS crews also responded to the scene.

The two men were taken to a hospital for evaluation, and were later released. The boat that sank is the Motor Vessel Tom Bussler.

U.S. Coast Guard officials are investigating the sinking, and said Tuesday afternoon that the Kentucky Lock and Dam at mile marker 22 on the Tennessee River has ceased locking operations due to the sunken vessel. McGinnish Marine will reportedly develop a salvage plan for the vessel.

The Coast Guard said the M/V Tom Bussler has approximately 4,100 gallons of diesel on board, but there have been no reports of oil sheening in the water.
