US Highway 60 was returned to normal traffic flow Monday night in Ballard County after a daylong operation to offload and recover a semi and trailer that ran off the road into a ravine.
The accident occurred just east of LaCenter before 7 a.m. Monday. Traffic was restricted to one lane for most of the day after the accident while the truck's load of potatoes was offloaded.
At about 6 p.m. the entire roadway had to be shut down so the semi and trailer could be extricated from the ravine.
At one point McCracken County officials were stopping traffic at the county line because of the backup into Ballard County. The Kentucky Department of Transportation reported that about 30 large trucks were also backed up waiting for the accident to be cleared.
KYTC reports that an environmental cleanup crew will be back at the crash site on Tuesday morning. Traffic on Tuesday may have to again be restricted to one lane while they work at the scene.
