Weekend Wildfire Burns in Dry LBL

LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES - The US Forestry Service says a Saturday wildfire at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area lingered into Sunday before it was contained.

LBL Forest Service spokesperson Jan Bush said firefighters remained on patrol Sunday to monitor for any embers that might spread, but the main blaze had been extinguished.

Officials believe the fire began Saturday in the Nickell Branch area when a hay cutter hit a rock, and the flames spread quickly due to dry conditions.

About 35 firefighters from communities including Lyon County, Burna, Ledbetter and Grand Lakes helped US Forestry Service crews fight the blaze that burned about 250 acres.

Smoke plumes could be seen from miles away, and drew many curiosity seekers to the scene, both on land and by boat.

Monday saw some welcome rains fall across much of western Kentucky, including the lakes area.

  Was this one of the areas that the forest service burned earlier in the year to prevent this kind of thing from happening? I know they burned right up to the edge of our cemetery and left the area looking like a disaster. They burned on a day when the wind was 16 - 24 mph and gave me (the contact person for the cemetery) notice the day of the burn. Ended up getting away from them and catching a tree on fire at the entrance to the cemetery. Tree is still laying by the road. Great job forest service! Keep up the good work!

  Someone complained about the pictures not being the same size? Really? So they should lower the resolution of the better photos to fit the resolution of the worst photos? No thanks. Let me see the better photos better...

  Donna and staff, thank you for covering the story and pictures. I had a loved one and several friends fighting the fire. A big thank you to the Red Cross volunteers for bringing water, snacks and supper out to the firefighters and other agencies involved.

  We are working to make sure all photos are the same size, Aldo. However, it's a little disconcerting when that's the comment you take the time to make about a story that involved at least three people who voluntarily came in on their day off to bring to you. I hope you enjoyed these pictures of the fire as much as the ones you got from other media sources Saturday. Or did you even notice.

  Is it TOO MUCH TO ASK that they photos be made all the same size? The photos move all over the page. Just standardize them so they look more professional please. Same size for all of them instead of chasing them across the page.

  PBT D I'm a member over here in Burna myself but due to health problems can not respond to calls at this time. Even called to make sure our fellow fire fighters had enough water & ice. The public just I should say most of the public just doesn't understand what alittle assist like water or snacks can mean when we're out there busting it to contain fires like this one was. But I know for a fact Obama was plans to fly over the site tomorrow lol.

  Dan t. Obozo is sending help from Washington. (-: Being a member of a volunteer department, the wifes/husbands bring in all necessary supplies that are not on the front lines. It is a family thing for support.
