Saturday, Sept. 20, is the date for the ninth annual “monster” community yard and bake sale to benefit the Mayfield-Graves County Needline and Food Pantry. The sale will be held in the Humphries Tobacco Warehouse, 205 North 12th St., next to Wilma’s Kountry Kitchen from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Last year the sale raised about $10,000 for the Needline & Food Pantry that provides emergency food and help with utilities for local needy residents, according to event chairman Tommy Powell.

“This promises to be a mega-sale,” Powell said. “We have more donations than ever and we even have some of those mystery items that we don’t know what they are for. Our warehouse section is brimming over with everything from furniture, appliances to toys and household goods."

“This is a community-wide event supported by many individuals from various churches, businesses and organizations. Hunger and poor nutrition are right here in Mayfield and Graves County and this money will assist the Needline and Food Pantry in helping the truly needy in our community.”

All proceeds from the sale go directly to the Needline and Food Pantry. Churches supporting the sale this year are First Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church’s Women’s Mission, First Church of the Nazarene and Calvary United Methodist Church.

The Needline and Food Pantry serves about 350 families per month despite the fact that families generally can only receive emergency food help about every two months because of the lack of resources.

“We are excited about this event because it is one of our largest fund-raisers for the year,” said Jackie Herndon, Director of the Food Pantry and Needline. “We invite everyone to come out, have fun and make this sale a huge success.”

Volunteer pricers, stockers and runners to help before and during the sale are needed. Contact First Christian Church, 270-247-2204, if you can help.

Leftovers from the sale will be donated to the JU Kevil Center and other local charities.
