U.S. forecasters say chances are good that much of the nation will have a warmer than normal winter, but it likely won't be as toasty as the previous two winters.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting a warmer than average winter from California through the Midwest to Maine, including our four-state region. Below-average temperatures are forecast for southern Alaska and the extreme northern edge of the 48 contiguous states. Normal temperatures are expected from Central Indiana to Idaho.

NOAA's Mike Halpert says the southern U.S. - farther south than our area - is likely to be drier than normal. The northern U.S. from eastern Washington through the Great Lakes and our area to upstate New York is likely to be wetter. Only the central plains, New England and west coast are forecast to have close to average precipitation.

Halpert says the likely development of a La Nina weather event plays a role in the forecast.
