Romney Names His Presidential Running Mate

Norfolk, VA - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has selected Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to be his running mate.

The candidate made his announcement to supporters via a phone app, saying "Mitt's Choice for VP is Paul Ryan." The GOP ticket was set to appear together at 9 am Eastern in Norfolk, VA.

Romney and Ryan are kicking off a four-day bus tour.

At 43, Ryan is a generation younger than the 65-year-old Romney.

  D.E.m.: The whacko I based it on was not really such a hateful whacko before he was converted to Mormonism. He worked hard, supported his wife and children and was a good person, a little wierd sometimes but the Mormon religion changed him completely. The church was the one who harassed his wife to try to convert her, you would not believe the things they told her. As for the catholics I grew up with lots of them and loved it because I got that last piece of bologna on Friday instead of tuna. I was actually shocked at the opinions here about catholics. If I had known someone who was converted to catholicism and became a scumbag because of the conversion then I would question the religion and maybe be a bit sceptical about voting for them.

If you are basing your opinion of Romney because of some whacko who happens to be mormon then could you ever vote for a catholic?   D.E.m.:If Daniel knew the Mormon I knew he has every right to detest them if they all act that way. The one I knew was a converted Baptist. The mormon church incessantly harassed his stay at home wife via phone to convert her to mormonism. He left her, moved across the street, gave her no money and even locked up the fridge so his kids couldn't get any food. The neighbors supported and helped her until she got a job. If that is an expample of the typical mormon we may have a problem. I only defended their right to believe what they want.

  Dan t: You are correct about the entitlements. One of the big changes that needs to be made is to encourage work. I have a widowed daughter with one child who is in school and works part time. Her food stamps were cut because the month she applied was right after the month that had 3 paychecks. She got more money that month so they cut them, of course most months have two paychecks. Her husband was on disability and wasn't familiar with work, when he died she got nothing from SS for the child because he didn't pay in enough quarters. She tried K-Tap (?) but didn't qualify because she picked up a few extra days at work and made too much money. If she drops two days a month from work and refuses to fill in she will qualify. With instances like this it is no wonder people won't work. If they don't work they can get the needed help to survive, if they do work they can't make it. We need to change the entitlements to encourage work for the low paid worker. We need to discourage multiple illegitimate children. In order to reform the programs we need to start in the schools and teach the advantages of working. It would help if we threw in morality and proper behavior like the old McGuffy readers. Not religious just basic standards for civilization. Children who are raised on a government check will probably live on their own government check, especially if they don't know any other way. It will probably take more than 10 or 15 years because we have a welfare generation. Until employers pay a decent wage that is enough for survival we will need entitlements. We had one pregnant woman at work who had to cut her hours to qualify for medicaid, she couldn't afford insurance when working full time.

  @ Judy apologize if i was wrong about your comment but millions of people watch the mainstream media and trust me they give Obama a pass on everything. The mormon comment was directed at Daneil since he seems to detest them. You can see a lot of tv news clips on the web also so it's not just on the "idiot box". I just wish all our leaders had to follow the same laws the impose on us. Look at all the waivers Obama handed out to his freinds for Obamacare. How many politicians have been caught not paying taxes on something? If we did that we would get a lot more then a slap on the wrist. My point was if a republican gets caught doing something wrong they are thrown out and rightfully so. If a democrat does something wrong he usually apolgizes and goes about his merry way.

  But we do need a make changes which needs to start this fall & slowly to the entitlements so people can understand them and adjust to them not like the Greek government or other countries that have failed. We do not need the people in the streets like we had back in the 60's...Change needs to be made slowly but not Obama's style. The government needs to lay out a 10 or 15 year program.an to cut the entitlement plans and give our kids a chance to see something for their taxes they have paid into this government and have trust it will be there for them...

When I said past presidential and congressional polieice I meant things like LBJ's "great society", NAFTA, GATT, deregulation, allowing in illegal aliens to please the corporations, un-needed wars, unregulated derivatives and credit default swaps, sending money to foreign countries to buy friends, bailouts, massive inflation, housing market, etc. Things that made the economy look good for a while are now coming back to bite us in the behind. As for the Mormon beliefs, they are no more weird than some of the mainstream ones. Obama's preacher? Do people actually listen to what preachers say? The biased news media kinda puts me in mind of a basketball game where the refs are always unfair to your side and favor the other side. I don't watch much TV, especially the so called news, it is usually fluff. It is delivered on a screen whose properties put your mind in the suggestive alpha state so they can sell you whatever they want. I am not an Obama fan and I actually think there is something fishy about his background but that still doesn't make him guilty for the mess in this country. Bush and Cheney were probably guilty of a lot of the things hurled at them and more. If we actually knew what our past presidents, VP's and congressmen were guilty of we would probably hang them all.

  Or better yet, just don't WATCH the news at all. It's all crap. I haven't watched the news in years. If you read enough news, you don't have to clog up your TV viewing time with it. Reading is quicker, it's less emotionally charged, if you read it on the web you can double check stuff that seems like bull. Most of the media is in the tank for Obama and you know it. Just watch how they talk about Romney and Ryan compared to how they talk about Obama and Biden. Even democrats that aren't running for president get a pass. You here how Romney must be weird because he's a mormon but what about Harry Reid? Yes he's a mormon also but that's ok because he's a democrat. Joe Biden is a walking crazy sound bite but it gets excused simply because he's a democrat.   D.E.M.: You say the republicans have been held acccountable, havent you been listening lately? Obama has been blamed for this country being in bad shape. Isn't it a fact that we are now suffering from the policies of past presidential and congressional policies? It looks to me as if the chickens have come home to roost. Obama hasn't helped it get any better but he had a huge mess when he got the job. The big mess is the reason I think republicans didn't want the presidency last time and I am not sure they want it this time. That way they can say don't blame us and it will work because we have short memories and talking points soon become fact. When it comes to health care, somewhere down the road we are have to realize that resources are finite, everyone deserves health care and maybe it should be for the people, not to make the doctors and drug companies rich. Maybe then we could have health care that wasn't so much "here take this pill".

  D.E.m. You are correct about not comparing generations, especially when it comes to medical costs. It cost my mother one days pay for a hospital room for me. When our kids were young the doctor bills were paid with monthly payments ($5-$10) and we could afford them. Things have changed. Prices have gone up much faster than average income. If I pay for my medicare drug coverage why won't they cover my two yearly prescriptions of drugs that have been on the market for years? Didn't Bush try to change Social Security to personal accounts to try to boost the stock market? I can't figure out who scares me the most, the democrats or the republicans. Actually I think Republicrats is a better description.

  Well they wouldn't be happy because they saw the need for medicare and social security. They would not be happy that Paul Ryan wants to privatize it and give it to bankers and insurance companies. They would be unhappy unions are declining. Government employees aren't over, those days passed during the Arthur Administration. Health savings accounts don't work if you have cancer.   You are crazy if you think that generation thinks the country is heading in the right direction. We pay for social security out of our paychecks so it's not an entitlement. Unions were way different back then and you know it. Government empoyees are laughing all the way to the bank and this generation is spoiled. As for insurance i wish they would just cover serious issues even if that's birth control but if you have a headache and go to the doctor it should come out of your pocket. Got a buddy that works at one of the plants in calvert and he has a health savings account and loves it. To compare this generation to that one is crazy and you know it.

  Rational G, Well a lot of what I post comes from the skeptics project, the center for inquirty, etc. I also saw a Penn and Teller show on immigration. The company I work for benefits from illegal immigrants, more people more sales, more jobs. Dem, the greatest generation was one of the most pro-social programs generation ever. They pushed for social security and medicare and medicaid. They were big union supporters. They used the GI bill to build the middle class. Also should insurance companies not be forced to pay for life saving medicine? How about colon screenings? Access to contraception is a way out of poverty as Christopher Hitchens once pointed out that giving women control over their bodies is the secret to lowering poverty.

  The issue DEm, is about having the insurance that you pay for pay for your birth control. Or having the part that you pay, pay for birth control, just like it pays for your Viagra. Since you are not a woman, you probably don't know that a lot of them don't cover it, even if it is medically necessary for treating a condition such as endometriosis.   Well since most states that spend on social programs are in red states that will be interesting Dem. And there will be a lot more poverty as the Republicans restrict birth control. Paul Ryan wants to outlaw birth control. I guess you are planning on having 12 kids. Science would be surpressed, fewer people will go to college which means there will be fewer opportunities, insurance companies can reject you for having a pre-existing condition. Voter ID laws are designed to help the GOP win. It is simple as that.

  Oh and my wife's doctor quit along with a few others who say they plan to retire before the government takes over. I kno i know if you don't see it you won't beleive it but some smaller practices really don't know what to expect and they don't seem to thrilled about it.

  Daniel, those guys were Republican In Name Only. Eisenhower - he worried about the "military industrial complex", which means jobs, so he was obviously a Communist. Teddy Roosevelt - he was too worried about the environment and used Federal authority to prevent development of our natural resources, plus he believed in eugenics just like Margaret Sanger did. Lincoln - removed powers from the states and placed it in the hands of the Federal government. None of those guys were good Republicans, the Tea Party wouldn't let any of them in today. Reagan would even be a hard sell today because of his record of raising taxes when he had to.

  Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt, Lincoln, etc. I doubt anybody is giving up their practice. Being a physician is quite a good paying practice with good job security. I don't work in the health insurance sector. You can also say that universal coverage is quite good as everybody has access to health care and the nations spend less on health care.

  And then there is the dillemia that some people, including me, have in that I don't want to vote for either of these bozos, Obama or Romney, no matter who their running mate is. I wonder how many people out there are voting for a candidate truly because they agree with their platforms or just because, hey, I am registered Republican or Democrat and this is the Republican/Democrat candidate and so I have to vote for him. I bet not many. I suppose if a person was an Independent they could technically vote for either one and not "scratch" their ticket, but if you don't like either, what do you do? Nothing is being done to improve the terrible mess that was made for the two terms preceeding Obama, and frankly, I don't think either of these candidates can improve it. Plus, you have Congress and the Senate constantly in a pi**ing contest. It is so ludicrious it's almost laughable.

  I kind of think it was a fairly good decision to pick Paul Ryan as a running. At least (so far) he is not the typical money wasting politican.....at least to my knowlege. Hopefully he wont turn out to be as crooked as the rest of them. I guess we'll see.

  Dem please explain why an insurance company would want to insure a 75 year old with cancer? They will turn people down with pre-existing conditions. Paul Ryan supported outlawing several types of contraception. How are people going to pay for unwanted children? Why should I vote for a president who thinks god is an alien from planet Kolab and believes a fraud named Joseph Smith found golden plates in New York?

  I agree that we need to cut spending but why is it that the poor and elderly is where we want to cut, not grants, wars, corporate welfare etc. Years ago when Periot was runing for president he said that all of the income tax collected west of the Mississippi was needed to pay the interest on the national debt. Wasn't that before our jobs left with NFTA and GATT? I wonder what the figure is now? Do we even collect enough income tax to pay the interest on the debt? Aren't the fundamentalist christians and the elderly a lot of the republican base? Romney is a Mormon and described as not a Christian, his running mate is preceived as going after medicare. Does this mean that once again the Republicans really don't want to be elected, just like last time? Could it be that the country is beyond help and they don't want the blame for the economy getting worse? I would like to see Romney elected because I would love to see the reaction if Joseph Smith's prophecy comes true.

  A lot of msnbc talking points on here. If we don't start cutting spending soon there won't be nothing left. As for Romney shipping jobs overseas have you not been paying attention the last 3 years? Romney will win this state big and hopefully the election but as always it will be close. People will still beleive the crap coming out of Obama's camp and think granny will get thrown off the cliff. Noboby's perfect but i'm ready to give someone else a chance to help this economy because Obama has failed.

  Judy T., you, Daniel B., and some of the others who frequent this site are entitled to believe some of the nonsense that you espouse, but you should get your facts straight when your postings purport to involve facts. For instance, the Gulf Stream flows from off the coast of Africa westward along the Florida peninsula and northward to off the New England Coast. The ocean current of the Gulf of Mexico is the Loop Current. Whether the oil spill there somehow affected weather in the Gulf, as you claim, has not been established by science. However, no doubt some fruitcake organizations such as the one that claims Kentucky puts more pollution into the air than, say, New York City or Los Angeles or Atlanta, would support that theory.

Cutting student aid will further cause the decline of America as we have a less educated society that makes it harder to cure disease, advance technology and cause America to fall further behind. We have seen the Ryan plan in Europe and it has caused pain and misery. David Cameron pretty well as destroyed the British economy with austerity. Anyway man made climate change is real and is supported by the vast majority of scientists. We have seen it this summer through the drought. Will cut student aid. Partly true. He knows like most economic experts that our current spending level and deficit spending is unsustainable. Cuts must be made. 3. Doesn't believe in climate change. Partially true. He believes in climate change he just doesn't believe it is man made. I too do not believe climate change is not man made. There is no proof whatsoever and many respected scientist agree. It has been proven that they have manipulated the data to correspond to what they believe. Only Al Gore, Liberal Democrats, Liberal Media, and their cronies are pushing this and they are all doing it to make money.
