The Trump administration and Republican-led House are revisiting the question of whether adults who are able to work should be required to work to get taxpayer-provided health insurance.

The federal-state Medicaid program for low-income and disabled people covers more than 70 million U.S. residents. A surprising number of working-age adults with Medicaid, nearly 60 percent, are already employed either full- or part-time.

Most who aren't working report reasons such as illness, caring for a family member, or going to school.

Work requirements are under discussion in a number of states. In Kentucky, Republican Gov. Matt Bevin is proposing that the state be allowed to suspend coverage for able-bodied adults who don't comply. Besides illness, exceptions would include job training and caring for a disabled relative.
