August Third Driest Ever in Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, IL - You might not have noticed in southern Illinois, but August was the third driest on record in Illinois.
Climate experts said Thursday the statewide average precipitation for August was 1.38 inches, which was 2.22 inches below average. Illinois saw its driest August in 1952, when it rained just 1.12 inches. August of last year saw precipitation of 3.64 inches.
Angel says only far southern Illinois and portions of northeastern Illinois saw significant precipitation during the month. He says there were some areas in western Illinois that received less than a tenth of an inch of rain in August.
August's statewide average temperature was 73.1 degrees. That's just 0.4 degrees below average.
