Democrat Running For Treasurer Blasts Cross
CHAMPAIGN, IL - Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross hasn't made his bid for treasurer official yet, but his potential candidacy is already drawing criticism from a Democrat seeking the office.
Cross told House Republicans Wednesday that he's stepping down from his House leadership post soon and considering a run for state treasurer. He says a formal announcement will come in two weeks.
Democratic state Sen. Mike Frerichs is running for state treasurer. In a statement, he calls Cross a "Springfield insider" for two decades who contributed to the state's fiscal crisis.
The race will be wide open as Treasurer Dan (ROOTH'-ur-furd) says he's seeking the Republican nomination in the 2014 governor's race.
Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Schillerstrom has said he's running for treasurer.
