Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican state Sen. Jim Oberweis are debating which candidate has the best plan to create jobs and improve the lives of Illinois residents.

The candidates are meeting Wednesday for the first debate of the U.S. Senate race.

Durbin says he wants to build a stronger middle class by providing tax incentives to companies that create good-paying jobs and ensuring families have access to affordable health care. He also says students should be able to refinance college loans to pay a lower interest rate.

But Oberweis says the average Illinois family earns less today than when Durbin ran for re-election six years ago.

The dairy entrepreneur and asset manager says he knows how to create jobs. He also says he wants to improve education.
