U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is praising Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid as "one of the ablest leaders of the Senate Democratic caucus in modern history."
But Durbin's statement Friday says nothing about whether he'll try for the leadership job Reid is vacating.
The 75-year-old Reid announced Friday he will not seek re-election in 2016. His announcement sets in motion a succession race between his top two deputies, Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and Durbin of Illinois.
Durbin released a statement praising Reid that says the Senate "will miss his leadership." Durbin says he'll keep fighting beside Reid in Congress "on behalf of working families in this country."
