House Session Called to Vote on Smith Explusion
By AP
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Illinois House members will vote next month on expelling indicted state Rep. Derrick Smith, and also could take action on pensions.
Speaker Michael Madigan issued a memo Friday saying the House will convene Aug. 17. A two-thirds vote would be required to expel Smith.
Gov. Pat Quinn's office says he thinks that would also be the time to overhaul government pensions. The issue has been on hold all summer.
A House committee on Thursday recommended Smith be removed from office. Federal prosecutors contend he took a $7,000 bribe for promising to steer a state grant to a daycare center.
The Chicago Democrat pleaded not guilty, refused to step aside and remains on the November ballot.
