IL Prisons Mum on Who Gets Tours
By AP
SPRINGFIELD, IL - First, Governor Pat Quinn banned reporters from touring Illinois prisons as a security risk. Now, his administration won't say who does get in.

Quinn's Department of Corrections says it'd be too burdensome to collect tour records from each of its two dozen facilities so it denied a data request from The Associated Press.

Quinn wants to cut the state budget by closing the high-security Tamms prison and the Dwight lockup for women. Litigation over whether it's safe to do that in an overcrowded system has derailed Quinn's timetable.

AP has requested information about tours of Pontiac prison, which is the new home for Tamms' inmates.

But a Department of Corrections spokesman says tour information is mixed with thousands of recorded visits from inmates' families, and it would take too much work to pull it out.
