Groups of protesters gathered in several Illinois cities the second night after prosecutors announced a Missouri police officer wouldn't face charges in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.

Peaceful protests and vigils were held Tuesday evening in Alton, Carbondale, Champaign, Chicago and Springfield. They followed Monday's announcement that a grand jury decided not to indict a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer in the August shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

In Chicago, protesters camped outside the mayor's office and then marched downtown. Southern Illinois University students were among the crowds in Carbondale. More than 100 people protested in front of the Champaign County courthouse at a rally that closed Main Street for about an hour.

And dozens of people attended a vigil at Union Baptist Church in Springfield.
