Judge: IHSA Can Block Media or Charge For Access
By AP
CHAMPAIGn, IL - A judge has ruled that the Illinois High School Association can charge news outlets that want to produce video webcasts of high school sports or bar such coverage altogether without violating a 2008 agreement over the right to sell photos taken at sports.

A Sangamon County judge ruled Tuesday the IHSA didn't violate the agreement with the Illinois Press Association over media access to high school sports by blocking The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald from producing a webcast of a football playoff game. The IHSA has also charged for access to games.

IHSA Director Marty Hickman says the ruling reflects the association's longstanding policy of charging for broadcast rights.

But IPA attorney Don Craven says the settlement included access for web-based newspaper products. Craven says the organization may appeal.
