ELGIN, IL - School officials and authorities will be able to share juvenile criminal records under a new Illinois law.

The legislation stems from an attack on an Elgin teacher who lost an eye in 2008. That's when a student under investigation for two other violent attacks came at the teacher with a knife.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill Monday in suburban Chicago. It goes into effect next year and says law enforcement records can be shared orally but can't become part of school records or public records.

Also, law enforcement can only provide information to schools if it's believed there's a threat.

The teacher, Carolyn Gilbert, tells the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald that she believes her attack could have been prevented with such legislation.
