Special Session Called for IL Lawmakers
By AP
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is calling lawmakers back to Springfield next month specifically to address overhauling pensions.

Quinn has announced an Aug. 17 legislative session for lawmakers to push forward with "full-scale reform."

The governor says downstate school districts and suburban Chicago districts must pay their own pension costs, which the state currently picks up. He proposed a 12-year phase in of that idea.

Pension reform has been on hold all summer as negotiations between Republicans and Democrats over how to address the some $83 billion in unfunded liability have gone nowhere.

Quinn says it's time to vote.

House members were already scheduled to meet Aug. 17 to vote on whether to expel indicted Democratic Rep. Derrick Smith.
