WWII Soldier Receives Veteran of The Month Honors
By AP News Staff
Centralia, IL - Another prestigious honor can be added to a Centralia man's list of military accomplishments.

U.S. Army veteran Stanley Marcum was named September Veteran of the Month by the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs on Sunday during the DuQuoin State Fair.

Officials say the Veteran of the Month award is bestowed upon veterans who continue to serve their communities after leaving military service.

Marcum served as a squad leader in some of World War II's bloodiest battles, including the Battle of the Bulge.

He's also known for his work with Centralia's Neighborhood Commission, the Boy Scouts and the city's little league baseball program. But, officials say Marcum's most noble mission involves caring for his grandson, a Marine who was injured.
