Kentucky's Democratic attorney general wants to revive a lawsuit the state's Republican governor decided to drop.

Gov. Matt Bevin's administration won't defend a state law requiring life insurance companies to verify whether policyholders have died and notify their heirs so they can receive benefits. Several insurance companies have sued, arguing the law cannot be applied retroactively.

Bevin said he agrees the law cannot be applied retroactively, adding it was not a good idea to use taxpayer money to defend something he thinks is illegal.

Attorney General Andy Beshear said Thursday he will ask the state Supreme Court to substitute for the governor so the case can continue, but he said it would be an uphill battle.
