Police spokesman Norman Chaffins said Ellis was in uniform but outside his police cruiser when found. The exit was shut down as troopers investigate the shooting.
Police say that Ellis was a K-9 officer who had worked for the department for seven years. He is survived by a wife and two children.
Police say they have no suspects. The investigation is continuing.
Ellis' body has been taken to Louisville for an autopsy.
