FRANKFORT - Governor Beshear on Thursday announced the commonwealth's second-highest daily report of new COVID-19 cases and the highest positivity rate since May.

Beshear has announced 10,653 cases in the past two days. The Governor reported 4,911 new cases of the virus on Thursday, a number topped only by Wednesday's total of 5,742 cases.

Beshear also announced 37 new deaths. The deaths include five people in McCracken County, four in Christian County, one in Ballard County, and one in Livingston County.

The positivity rate is currently 11.9%.

"We are in a dangerous place. It is now clear that we are seeing an escalation related to holiday gatherings," said Beshear. "This is not the time to make it harder to react to this virus when it may be surging again. We have to have the tools to fight back."

Beshear said more than 32,000 Kentuckians have been vaccinated in the last two days.
