Canadian Company Eyes KY for Possible Hemp Plant

Kentucky is in the running to land a hemp processing plant being considered by a Canadian company, but questions about the plant's legality have to be resolved.

Hemp Oil Canada CEO Shaun Crew says Kentucky has the advantage of a central location and hemp-growing heritage.

But he said Wednesday it's difficult to make any commitment until legal questions are settled.

Hemp was banned decades ago when it was classified as a controlled substance related to marijuana.

Kentucky lawmakers passed a bill this year to allow the crop to be reintroduced, but only if the federal government lifts its ban.

Attorney General Jack Conway recently said growing hemp remains illegal in Kentucky.

Agriculture Commissioner James Comer says hemp could be an economic boost for Kentucky.

The Courier-Journal reported on the company's interest in Kentucky in Wednesday's paper.
