OWENSBORO, KY - A couple of college students in western Kentucky are conducting a research project to try to gain a better understanding of why some veterans readjust well to civilian life and others don't.
Primary researcher Robert Brooks, an incoming senior at Kentucky Wesleyan College, told the Messenger-Inquirer that he is interviewing honorably discharged veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan to gain some perspective on the issue. Brooks is a Marine Corps. veteran who is majoring in psychology. He says his main goal is to find out how the military can help soldiers readjust better.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, male veterans ages 18 to 24 had an unemployment rate of 29.1 percent last year, which was 11 points higher than nonveterans in the same age group.
