A memorial for fallen Kentucky National Guard members is now open to the public.

According to multiple media reports, a dedication ceremony for the new memorial was held Monday at the Boone National Guard Center.

The memorial, which includes a statue of one of Kentucky's first leaders Daniel Boone, was made possible by more than $1.4 million in private donations.

During the ceremony, Lt. Gov. Crit Luallen and Kentucky National Guard Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini both said that the memorial isn't only for fallen guardsmen, but for their families as well.

Luallen said the memorial serves as a reminder that freedom isn't free.
