First lady Jane Beshear says donors across the state contributed nearly $800,000 in money and supplies to the state's 15 domestic violence shelters on Saturday.

The donations came from the seventh annual Shop and Share Day where volunteers asked shoppers at Kroger, Food City and Super Dollar Discount Food stores to donate cash or supplies for the shelters that protect women fleeing from domestic violence.

Since 2008, Beshear said the effort has raised just under $4 million. Beshear said the donations will help ease the financial burden on the shelters so the staff can focus on helping people.

Last year, the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence fielded more than 23,000 crisis phone calls and served more than 42,000 men, women and children.
