Republican James Comer's campaign for governor has picked up an endorsement from former U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis.

Lewis calls Comer a "breath of fresh air'' in the GOP and says the state's agriculture commissioner is the best choice for governor in next year's election.

Comer's campaign says Lewis announced his support at a fundraiser in Elizabethtown this week.

Lewis was first elected to Congress in 1994 in Kentucky's Second Congressional District. He decided against seeking re-election in 2008.

Comer has also been endorsed by U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield and former U.S. Rep. Anne Northup.

Republicans are hoping to win back the governor's seat after two terms by Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear. Governors are limited to two terms in Kentucky.

Comer faces former Louisville councilman Hal Heiner in the GOP primary.
