Fish & Wildlife Seeks to Curb Alcohol on Water
By AP
FRANKFORT, KY -
Law enforcement agencies and Fish and Wildlife Department officers in Kentucky are taking part Friday in a nationwide program called Operation Dry Water.
The effort is an attempt to minimize instances of alcohol use on the waterways and boating under the influence. Throughout the weekend, safety messages will be included at boat ramps. Law enforcement officers will conduct courtesy boat inspections and answer questions about boating laws and required safety equipment.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife boating education coordinator Zac Campbell says the goal isn't to surprise and arrest people but to have no cases of boating under the influence. The agency says last year during the effort, conservation officers issued 188 boating safety warnings. Officers also issued 84 citations with seven BUIs. But Campbell says there were no accidents.
