Conservative activists from around the country gathered in Louisville to boost Republican Matt Bevin's uphill primary challenge of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

More than 1,500 activists cheered as Bevin shared a stage with fellow Senate challenger Chris McDaniel of Mississippi and conservative media personality Glenn Beck. The event was sponsored by FreedomWorks, a Washington-based tea party group whose political action committee backs conservative candidates around the country.

As hundreds of voters waved Bevin signs, the Louisville businessman blasted McConnell as a Washington establishment figure who's forgotten Kentucky. And he criticized the senator for not agreeing to debate him before a May 20 primary.

McConnell was in Louisville earlier Saturday to award a Purple Heart to a veteran injured in Iraq. The senator did not take questions after the ceremony.
