Governor Steve Beshear has proclaimed this week as Safe Schools Week in Kentucky, a designation that coincides with the first meeting of the Kentucky Youth Bullying Prevention Task Force.

The task force, created last month by Gov. Beshear to study bullying in schools and recommend practices and policies to help foster safer, harassment-free school environments, held its first meeting today.

Members heard from Jon Akers, director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety, who urged task force members to take and support the online “LEAN On Me; STOP the Bullying Pledge.”

“Creating safe and healthy learning environments for children and teachers is absolutely critical to ensure academic success,” Akers said. “Safe Schools Week targets barriers that adversely affect school environments and provides strategies to address these deterrents to education. The ‘Lean On Me’ campaign encourages students to seek help or help their fellow students when confronted with negative behaviors such as when a fellow student is being bullied. Seek help or offer help in time of need. I encourage all school districts to ask their students to take the Pledge to stamp out bullying and risky behaviors.”

The task force will submit its findings in a report to the Governor by Nov. 15, 2015.

“Excellence in education depends on safe, secure and peaceful school settings,” Gov. Beshear said in the proclamation. “The observance of Safe Schools Week encourages students, parents, educators and the community to learn about ‘Safety,’ ‘Teamwork,’ ‘Opportunities’ and ‘Power’ (S.T.O.P.) and stop the bullying in our schools to promote positive and safe learning climates free of drugs, alcohol, weapons and fear where all can succeed.”
