The Kentucky Department of Insurance has fined Humana Inc. after investigators received complaints regarding letters the company sent to policyholders detailing their options under the Affordable Care Act.

According to the Courier-Journal, state regulators found the letter “misleading” and fined the company $65,430.

The letter was distributed to nearly 6,500 people in August. Policyholders say they had 30 days to change their policy or they would face a more expensive option that complies with the Affordable Care Act.

According to regulators, the letter was unclear about allowing policyholders time to compare with the state’s health insurance exchanges that begin on Oct. 1.

Humana is currently working with state regulators. A Spokeswoman for the company says there are no plans to appeal.
