Kentucky State Police is advising the public about a recent scam that has been reported.
Police said the victim contacted the them on Tuesday after receiving a suspicious phone call. The male caller reportedly advised the victim that he was an officer with the US Embassy, and that a relative had been arrested in Mexico.
The caller instructed the victim to send money via Western Union for their relative’s bond. Police said the caller re-contacted the victim Wednesday and instructed the victim to send more money.
Police said the phone number is possibly Canadian, and it appears the money was transferred to an account in the Dominican Republic.
KSP is requesting callers call them at 1-800-222-5555 to report scams, or to contact a local law enforcement agency.
