Kentucky lawmakers have wrapped up work on a bill that would allow victims of abusive dating relationships to seek emergency protective orders from courts.

The measure cleared the House early Wednesday as lawmakers neared the end of their legislative session. The bill earlier passed the Senate and now goes to Gov. Steve Beshear.

The bill culminates years of lobbying by victims' advocacy groups.

Sen. Whitney Westerfield says Kentucky would become the last state to offer victims of abusive dating relationships some civil protections.

Currently, protective orders can be granted in Kentucky only when violence occurs among married couples, couples who live together and those who have children together.

___

The legislation is House Bill 8.
