KY POW, Bataan Survivor Dies at 93

A Lexington World War II veteran who was a prisoner of war and survived the Bataan Death March has died at a veteran's home in Wilmore.

Ted Cook was 93-years-old when he died Thursday at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center. The Lexington Herald Leader reports Cook was a supply sergeant in April 1942 when American and Filipino forces surrendered to Japan and were forced to march to POW camps.

Later he was put on a freighter and taken to work in a Japanese steel mill, where he remained until the war ended.

Patsy Cook, his wife, told the newspaper that her husband's attitude kept him alive amid horrific conditions and she said that he would not allow himself to die.

A funeral is scheduled for Monday at Beaumont Presbyterian Church.
